A guide for adults near Charlotte

Rowing on Lake Wylie

Lake Wylie is a reservoir on the Catawba River that sits on the border of North and South Carolina, a short drive from uptown Charlotte. Its long, sheltered coves and early-morning calm make it one of the best places in the region to row. Catawba Yacht Club has been on the lake since 1939, and its masters rowing program has been launching sculls and sweep boats from the club dock since 1991.

What the water is like

Rowers go out early for a reason. At sunrise the lake is often glassy, the wind has not picked up yet, and there is very little powerboat traffic. As the day goes on, wind and wakes build, especially on summer weekends. Our crews plan their rows around those patterns and check the forecast before every launch.

Rowing through the seasons

The Carolina climate allows a long season on the water. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable conditions and the head-race calendar. Summer rows start at first light to beat the heat. In the colder months, many members train on rowing machines and in the gym, then head back out once the water and air warm up again.

Safety first

Every row follows the club's safety protocols and USRowing guidance. That includes weather and lightning checks, cold-water rules, launch support when needed, and a clear traffic pattern on the lake. New rowers learn these habits from the start.

Getting started as an adult

You don't need any experience. Most of our members started as adults, and many first picked up an oar in their forties, fifties or later. The Learn to Row program teaches the stroke, boat handling and dock etiquette in small groups. Graduates can then join weekend club rows, sculling sessions or a racing crew.
